Lois Bushnell Campbell's mother was Molly Ensign. Molly Ensign, b. 23 Dec 1770, d. 15 Jan 1860, was said to have been less than 5 feet tall, with a slight form, perfectly erect, elastic step and black eyes and a very decided Methodist. After their log house was built, she instituted regular services calling on various young men to read the service and offer prayers. One young man in who she took a special interest was induced to think seriously of making the Christian ministry his life's work, the renowned Bishop Hedding of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She married Abraham Bushnell b. Saybrook, Conn 27 Dec 1744, d Starksboro, Vt. 24 Dec 1824) in Canaan CT 9 Jan 1770. Abraham Bushnell while at Canaan Falls had a carding mill, the first of its kind in the state. Before wool can be spun into yarn for knitting or weaving into cloth, it first must be brushed, or carded. This tedious task was successfully mechanized in the second half of the 18th century.

In 1794 the entire family removed to Starksboro, where at the first town meeting abt 1796 he was chosen Selectman.
